Classroom Management
Class-wide reward systems are considered to be an evidence-based instructional practice in order to establish expectations for behavior and procedures and reward with reinforcement activities. View my classroom management strategies below.
Mona Lisa Land
A class-wide reward system is a tier one Positive Behavior Interventions and Support framework that I use in my elementary classroom is referred to as Mona Lisa Land. Mona Lisa Land includes 6 expectation "points" that students earn throughout the class period.
The Mona Lisa Land Expectations are as follows:
- Enter Quietly (So we can start right away)
- Show the Mona Lisa (The first time; no talking, "Mona" "Lisa" or "Show me the Mona Lisa"
- Respectful Listening (Eyes on speaker, mouth closed, hands are empty)
- Follow Directions (Listen to directions when explained, Ask 3 before Me)
- Work Quietly (Don't lose A.R.T., keep all 3 letters up)
- Clean up/Line up (Help clean up, be in seat and quiet on "10", quiet line up for hallway)
Classroom Contract
A classroom contract is a collaborative framework for Positive Behavior Interventions and Support framework that I will use in my secondary classroom. Students will meet in small groups and discuss their opinions and ideas that they have about how to behave positively and respectfully in the art classroom. After discussing the ideas with the class and creating a summary, the classroom contract will be signed by myself and the students. The contract will serve throughout the school year as a reminder to establish safe routines and encourage positive behavior.
Classroom Culture
The art classroom is an area where students are free to express themselves through the visual arts. Students are able to experiment with materials, interact with one another, and discuss the historical and cultural implications of art and art history. As an art educator, it is my goal to provide a physical and emotional safe space for my students to create artwork with confidence. Classroom procedures and rules are established and practiced at the beginning of the school year in order to provide a safe and encouraging classroom culture where every student feels affirmed as an individual and as an artist.
My #1 classroom rule is: Students will demonstrate respect for oneself, one's artwork, peers, teacher, others' artwork, classroom materials, classroom procedures and rules established in the classroom contract.
